BUSINESS PARTNERS IN CONSERVATION
With growing concern about climate change and air quality, it has never been more important to the health of our environment to be planting trees. Since 1992, the Otonabee Conservation Foundation, with the help of our Business Partners in Conservation, has been delivering the most successful environmental program of its kind in our watershed community – the Trees Project.
Through the Trees Project reforestation and environmental education program, 13,360 trees and shrubs were planted this year involving almost 800 youth who took part in classroom presentations and outdoor education activities!
By joining our growing list of Business Partners in Conservation, whose donations make the Trees Project possible, you and your business will be demonstrating a strong commitment to the environment to your clients and associates.
CLASSROOM PRESENTATION:
Through the forest stewardship education program of the Trees Project, area high school students have the opportunity to develop their knowledge of forest ecosystem management through in-class instruction and outdoor experiential education. The 50-minute classroom presentation introduces the concepts of interconnectedness of nature in the watershed and the importance of sustainable forest ecosystem management. The program covers tree species identification, the environmental and economic value of forests, forest cover characteristics of the Otonabee region watershed and
silviculture techniques.
OUTDOOR EXPERIENTIAL OPPORTUNITY:
Following the classroom presentation, the students have the opportunity to participate in a tree planting activity on conservation land or privately owned land. The students learn that marginal or idle agricultural lands are ideal candidates for reforestation. The soil and drainage characteristics of the property are taken into consideration when selecting the appropriate tree species for the site. The students begin to understand that reforested land will help reduce erosion, improve air and water quality and create habitat for a variety of wildlife species. And, they learn how to plant a tree with patience and care.
