THE OTONABEE REGION CONSERVATION FOUNDATION
ESTABLISHMENT
The Otonabee Region Conservation Foundation (Otonabee Conservation Foundation) was established in 1968 under the leadership and vision of founding Chairman, the late Mrs. Christine Nornabell. Mrs. Nornabell invited community leaders to join the Foundation Board of Directors, advancing conservation, in partnership with the Otonabee Region Conservation Authority.
MANDATE
The Letters Patent (1968, 2000) empower the Otonabee Conservation Foundation to aid the Otonabee Region Conservation Authority in the advancement of conservation in the following areas:
- to protect and enhance sustainable forest, woodlot, wetland and other wildlife communities using an integrated eco-system management approach;
- to promote landowner stewardship programs that contribute positively to the conservation of the watershed community's natural environment and wildlife resources;
- for environmental education, accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds;
- for affordable and sustainable outdoor recreation, accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds;
- for the conservation of environmentally significant lands;
- contributions to a natural legacy;
- for the conservation of pioneer articles and heritage buildings and structures acquired by the foundation; and,
- for conservation awards, academic scholarships, bursaries and grants in the environmental science and/or natural heritage realms of education and research
GOVERNANCE - New Directors Welcome for 2011-2012
The Otonabee Conservation Foundation Board of Directors includes 15 volunteers from the watershed community, having an expressed interest in the mandate of the charitable organization.
The Directors are involved in working Committees, primarily with a fund-raising or environmental focus. Often, the activities of the Committee attract other volunteers who enage in conservation in this way.
Currently, the Otonabee Region Conservation Foundation is seeking individuals who reside in the Otonabee Region watershed to serve on its Board of Directors and conservation committees.
Individuals with an interest in the natural and cultural heritage of the watershed and who can bring professional skills to further the vision, mission and projects of the Conservation Foundation are encouraged to apply.
ORCF Board members are actively involved in:
- Board governance, in accordance with its bylaws and established policies and procedures
- Developing strategic directions for the Foundation
- Promoting the mandate and activities of the Foundation throughout the community
- Attending bi-monthly Board meetings
- Developing and delivering conservation programs as an active participant on one or more committees
- Supporting Foundation fundraising initiatives.
