FLOOD WATCH SERVICE
The Flood Watch Service of Otonabee Conservation provides local municipalities and
community residents with current information about watershed conditions and what that means in
terms of potential high water and flood events. The service is a mandated program, supported
through the partnership of our local municipalities
and the province of Ontario.
Providing a flood forecasting and early warning service alerts
watershed residents
to anticipated events - it's important for people to know why and when the water levels may rise
so that they can take the necessary precautions. The information is also forwarded to municipal
staff so that emergency response teams are ready when they are needed. The Conservation
Authority provides the information - the municipalities respond.
The information Otonabee Conservation uses to monitor changing watershed conditions is collected from a variety of sources.
These include:
- a network of data loggers
- snow course surveys
- streams flow discharge measurements
- weather forecasts
- field observations, and
- real time radar images
As well, we are in contact with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Kawartha Conservation, and Trent-Severn Waterway for information about conditions north of the Kawartha Lakes and any adjustments that Trent-Severn is making to water control structures, particularly along the Otonabee River.
Information is available to watershed residents through the Flood Watch Hotline - the number is 745-5791 - and provides callers with the most up-to-date infromation about current conditions. And, people are encouraged to leave us information about conditions they are observing in their local area.
For information during periods of high water levels and flood events call the Flood Watch Hotline (705) 745-5791, extension 228.
