April is Earth Month, and April 22 is Earth Day
LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS PLAN EVENTS
FOR EARTH DAY 2009
More than 6 million Canadians join 500 million people in over 180 countries in celebrating Earth Day by hosting events and projects that address local environmental issues. Nearly every school child in Canada takes part in an Earth Day activity.
Locally, plans are well underway for Earth Month and Earth Day 2009. This year’s activities will focus on educating City residents about how to reduce the impacts of everyday activities on the environment, and how everyone can help reduce global warming.
Community organizations involved in this year’s Earth Month events include Otonabee Conservation, The Otonabee Conservation Foundation, The Clean Again-Green Again Committee, Peterborough Green-Up, The City of Peterborough Public Works Department, the Waste Management Department of the City, and CAW Local 524.
2009 Earth Month activities include those related to waste reduction, energy conservation and community involvement to clean up local parks, schoolyards, trails and neighbourhoods.
Earth Month organizers are also asking local residents to organize a litter clean-up during April in their neighborhood, or any public area that could use a clean-up. Bags and gloves can be provided if you are interested.
Volunteers are needed for upcoming Earth Day 2009 events so get involved!
