International Trails Day Festival

Trails offer a wonderful way to explore nature through the urban and rural landscapes of Peterborough City and County. Communities throughout the region invite residents - their families and friends - to celebrate trails on Saturday, June 2nd with the First Annual International Trails Day Festival. The excitement takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and all of the activities are free!
Del Crary Park (Peterborough) is the main venue to kick off the day's events, with the official declaration of International Trails Day, musical entertainment and a host of trails related exhibitors and fun-filled activities.
Explore your favourite trail, or experience the excitement of exploring new territory with some guidance from one of the many Trail Volunteers who will be stationed at the following trails:
- Roger's Cove
Located on Maria Street, Peterborough
Your Trail Hosts: City of Peterborough, Peterborough Green-Up and the Peterborough Bicycle Advisory Committee
Activities include: Take part in short cycling skills courses designed to help the whole family ride safely on our trails and roadways, pick up some great cycling giveaways, learn about the great trails and bikeways in the city of Peterborough, and find out about some local organizations who help to support cycling in the city and county of Peterborough.
- Nicholl's Oval
Meet near the Bandstand along the Rotary Trail, just south of Parkhill Road East, Peterborough
Your Trail Hosts: Peterborough Cycling Club and Wildrock Outfitters
Activities include: Basic Bike check by Wildrock Outfitters mechanics
The Peterborough Cycling Club will be offering a PPC-sanctioned and led leisurely ride, leaving the trail station at 2:15 p.m. -ride may last 1.5 hours
There will also be information available about cycling trails in Peterborough City and County
- Lakefield Trail
Meet at the corner of Block Road and River Road, Lakefield
Your Trail Host: Lakefield Trail Committee, Biker Babes, Cycling Chicks
Activities Offered: Trail Information and a Scavenger Hunt with prizes available
- B.E.L. Rotary Bridgenorth Trail
Meet at Hilliard Street and 5th Line, Smith Ward
Your Trail Host: B.E.L. Rotary Club, Cycling Dudes
Activities Offered: Trail Information and Snacks
- Sawer Creek
Meet at the intersection of County Rd. 32 and Hickey Road
Your Trail Host: County of Peterborough, Peterborough Field Naturalists
Activites Offered: Trail and Nature Information and Water Re-fill Station
- Millbrook Valley Trails
Meet at end of Distillery Street at Medd's Mountain, Millbrook
Your Trail Host: Millbrook Valley Trails Committee
Actvities Offered: Unveiling of the Trailhead Signs, guided walks, and tours of the community garden
- Rotary Greenway Trail
Meet at the Shelter at Trent University
Your Host: Rotary Club of Peterborough, Biker Babes, Cycling Chicks
Activities Offered: Trail Information and Hourly Walks and Bike Rides
- Jackson Park
Meet at the Park at 12:00 noon (please note this time!)
Your Host: Dave Dame and Runner's Life
Activities Offered: Fun Run for Kids and Adults
In addition, public speaking events will be held in Lindsay on Friday June 1st and Saturday June 2nd featuring renowned international traveller and public speaker Colin Angus. Ticket information is available at www.adventuretravelfestival.ca
International Trails Day is an annual celebration of trails to promote trail development, the use of trails and the healthy lifestyle they encourage. It is celebrated each year on the first Saturday in June. It is celebrated in several Canadian provinces including Nova Scotia and Manitoba.
Locally, the festivities are being organized by a committee including Otonabee Conservation, Rotary Club of Peterborough, trails enthusiasts (Cycling Dudes, Biker Babes, Cycling Chicks), Peterborough County, City of Peterborough, Township of Smith-Ennsimore-Lakefield, Peterborough Green-Up, Peterborough Cycling Club, Peterborough County-City Health Unit, and the Millbrook Valley Trails.
