2010 TREES PROJECT LOOKING FOR LARGE SITE
The Otonabee Region Conservation Authority is looking for a 15-acre site for the 2010 Scout Trees Planting Day. Each spring, the Conservation Authority, in partnership with Kawartha Waterways Scouts (Canada) and the Otonabee Conservation Foundation, organizes a large-scale tree planting activity day involving the planting of 10,000 trees by hundreds of Scouts and their families.
John Williams, Manager of Conservation Lands for the Authority and coordinator of the annual tree planting program, welcomes inquiries from area landowners. Williams describes a suitable tree planting site as currently idle open field or marginal agricultural land, that is 15 to 16 acres in size and easily accessible for the Scouts and their families on tree planting day.
Williams will work with the landowner to select native tree species suitable to the soil and drainage characteristics of the property. He will also arrange for ordering and delivery of the trees to the site. The cost of the trees to the landowner is at a reduced rate because the program receives financial support from the Otonabee Region Conservation Foundation and other program partners. The planting of the trees is by the members of Kawartha Waterways Scouts, scheduled for the first Saturday in May, 2010.
The 2009 Trees Project received financial support from the Otonabee Region Conservation Foundation, Kawartha Waterways Scouts, Peterborough County Stewardship Council and the Oak Ridges Moraine Foundation.
